The action to be analyzed in this Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), which is being prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA) and implementing regulations, is the construction and operation of the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) within the Smithsonian Institution on the Monument Site, a 217,800 square foot (SF) or five acre site bounded by Constitution Avenue, Madison Drive, 14th and 15th Streets NW on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. By preparing this EIS, the Smithsonian Institution is fulfilling its obligation at an early planning stage to consider the environmental impacts of the NMAAHC and initiating consultation under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) on the effects of the NMAAHC upon historic resources on or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
