[Welcome]
Welcome to the project website for the Environmental Impact Statement & Section 106 for the new Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture.
The action to be analyzed in this Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), which is being prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA) and implementing regulations, is the construction and operation of the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) within the Smithsonian Institution on the Monument Site, a 217,800 square foot (SF) or 5 acre site bounded by Constitution Avenue, Madison Drive, 14 th and 15 th Streets N.W. on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. By preparing this EIS, the Smithsonian Institution is fulfilling its obligation at an early planning stage to consider the environmental impacts of the NMAAHC and initiating consultation under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) on the effects of the NMAAHC upon historic resources on or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
